I know I’m not the only one. Many people don’t understand our enthusiasm for working out.

It’s more than the gym…it’s our life.

Ever since my parents got me a weight bench for my 14th birthday, diet and exercise has been a passion of mine. All my closest friends felt the same way; we were hooked. I loved the progression I’ve made throughout the years, going from a chubby kid not being able to do 1 push-up to having a 6-pack and being able to bench 250 pounds.

Despite my progression, I was unsatisfied with where I was in life. I was in excellent shape, but still felt inadequate in many areas. I was using the gym to hide from my problems. I worried about everything, got stressed easily, and was terrified of failure.

I thought, It would be great if I could translate my success in the gym to other areas of my life. To have more confidence in my abilities, to be able to take more risks and pursue my dreams.

Again, I’m not alone. I know many gym-goers that are living unsatisfied lives and I wrote this book to help them become enthusiastic about life the same way they are about working out.

It occurred to me that the knowledge was there; I have a doctorate degree and am highly educated on the human body. Also, I spent hundreds of hours researching exercise and nutrition throughout my life in hopes of getting the body of my dreams. I needed to find a way to translate it to something more than lifting weights.

I realized I could make long lasting changes if I took something I knew and was passionate about and made it applicable to life. Whenever a gym metaphor came to me I logged it in my phone and would share it with other “gym rats.”

Often I heard, “I never thought about it like that before. That’s awesome!” After a couple months of logging my ideas, I realized I had enough material to write a book on gym metaphors. I finished school in 2015, but I’m now a student of life.

Every day I’m observing myself and people around me and learning what I can do to make life better for all of us. One of the best ways to make radical changes is to take what you already know (going to the gym) and apply it to something larger (your values, character, self-esteem, etc.).

Stories and metaphors are powerful, especially if they are centered on things you’re interested in.

I’ve found these have yielded the greatest results in making positive changes in my life and those I share my ideas with. If you love working out, then you can’t miss out on these 32 metaphors that will change how you live your life.

These ideas are for the person that still works out on holidays, vacations, and their birthday. Working out is something they have to do, it’s something they want to do. This book is for the person that loves the gym and wants to get even more out of life.

I started working out when I was sixteen. I remember working for the whole summer and then at the end bought a nautilus home gym with bench press and weights. I was hooked fromk the first workout. I trained for about tenty years, off and on, and weight lifting was one of the core passions of my life.

But that all stopped about ten years ago when I got busy with kids, life, work and I just got sick of gyms: the crowds, gym fees and the sweat of other people socializing.

So I stopped going.
But life continued.
Afterr this I started focusin, not on making my body better but, myself and character. That is why this book is different. It uses the "gym lifetsyle" and applies it to everyday living.

Chapter 3 gets into hitting plateaus and that grabbed my attention right away. i have always wanted to get over that hump. Although I do most of my training at home these days, I can apply the advice in this book to push myself a little harder and make some progress again.

One reason I got tired of weight lifitng is I had hit a plateau after years and got bored. What I like about this book is that it hits all the right areas and covers the struggles that people in gyms have to endure when giving it all theor best in a workout. Life has plateaus as well, and if we are not conscious, we can stay stuck on these plateaus without making progress.

Chapter 4 is about focusing on your strenght spot and focisning on "Who you are and not what you achieve." Focus on who you are and the contribution you are making to this world.

Chapter 5 is about spotting, but not just in the gym; its about people spotting you in life. We should spot each other so we can help each other out.

Chapter 6 is about "Why do we do what we do?" You should question why you do things such as choices and actions, and chapter 7 deals with getting rid of the “junk” in your life like negativity. In the gym or dieting you’d be careful of nutrition and dieting. I really like how the author compares “life in the gym” to our daily lives and how similar they really are.

The rest of the book hits other important topics such as:

- giving out compliments to people
- Deciding what is the most important thing to do right now in your life;
- balancing your life in all areas to maintain balance
- Look your best
- Raise your standards
- Creating worthy goals
- Be a role model for others

"Apply what you are good at, to what you want to change in your life". If you think of it, this makes much more sense than "Try to do better with what you can't." Michael Unks hits a big nail with this book. I'm totally not into gym (if only I were!) - but the direct takeaway of a book like this is different What area do I want to change in my life? And what experience do I have where change worked for me? Now how can I use the positive experience on the area of change? Get this little book and use it as your source of inspiration for such a process.
Easy read
I really appreciate the fitness perspective of this book. It makes applying the lessons to other areas of life easier. The concept of taking 'small but important steps' hit home with me. I am always looking for meaningful books to pass on to my clients. Thank you Michael for this wonderful book.
Michael Unks did it again. I read his One Week Willpower and Awesome in Hours and was excited to see he had a new book out. His books are great reminders of why it's important to be a good person and bring value to the world and how. The Gym of Life does not disappoint. It inspires action on my part like his other two books.
This is an awesome book. Quirky and profound at the same time. Drawing the analogy between gym workouts and life sounds interesting but Michael turns this into an artform. Strengthen your core, find a spotter, get rid of the junk, this all applies to daily life too. The way that Michael has written this up and interspersed with personal stories I find his book a treat.
Michael Unks has taken his passion for working out and incorporated thirty-two ways to help readers max out professionally, personally, and spiritually. For instance, he uses the comparison of getting out of a personal rut by giving more speeches to switching up a routine in the gym. Also, he writes about strengthening your core at the gym as it relates to strengthening your core in life – the person you are, not what you achieve.
I so understand what the author means when he refers to someone referring to the day of the week as chest day, leg day, upper or lower body day. The health club is the first appointment I make with myself four days a week. When I am working out, I spend a lot of time thinking about how I can improve myself personally, and work on being a little kinder each day. The author has given me even more to think about, and as I work out, I will try to put some of his ideas to work.

I like how he uses fitness terminology to correspond to the areas of our lives that need a workout, including professional, spiritual, and personal relationships.
